A report on a seven day cycle trip from Nice in France to Santa Susana on the Costa Brava, a fabulous cycling adventure of 457 miles mostly keeping badlands right on the coast and including some off road tracks. Followed by a weeks relaxation with my family at the hotel onabrava in santa susana. badlands The whole trip was not decided upon or booked until six weeks previous; in fact it was conceived on a Sunday afternoon and booked the following morning! badlands This meant a lot of preparation in a very short time and cycling was stepped up to 160 miles a week for the following badlands five weeks. The touring bike I had for a year or so was made up of an aluminium aeron frame with a 105 chainset compact double on front and 27 on rear; I just about got away with this in the mountains. After a tyre fitting session with a freind in a garage one night trying out many types of tyres I decided on Schwalbe blizzards for their ease of popping on and off the rim, no levers needed. For luggage I bought the complete set of carradice super c: front and back panniers and bar bag, some of it I managed to get second hand, though the new rear panniers have the superior klik fix system for easy detachment, very handy. The front panniers really help to balance the bike and the bar bag can be easily badlands detached and used as a shoulder bag. Though it weighs 2.8 kilos it has a large porch where the bike can easily fit and better if the front wheel is removed. I did find this tent quite small and really during the trip was only used for sleeping in though it was easily erected and fitted inside a pannier. For a mattress I had a thermarest and a lightweiht sleeping bag. Everything went inside the panniers including tent. Total weight of the luggage was 15 kilos and the bike inside its cardboad box which inlcuded tools weighed 16 kilos at the airport, so without the box the whole rig was just under 30kilos on the road. Most of these were top class with restuarant, bar, swimming pools etc, beside the beach, and for a small tent do not need to be prebooked even in high season. Rates were around 14euros in the cote d'azur and averaged 22euros further down the coast (though some were charging 40euros). Out of season would be much cheaper. There really is an abundance of camping sites right along the coast and I especially recommend camping de la brise in saint marie de la mer and camping trivoly in torreilles both with beautiful beaches. The event took place in one of the best hotels on the Cote d’Azur in south France, private and very exclusive with a long tradition, same like Rolls-Royce itself, the hotel is called Cap Estel and overlooks the Mediterranean. Arriving at the airport I had a chauffeur waiting for me with a Rolls-Royce Ghost who brought recife me to the hotel. At the hotel a team from Rolls-Royce was waiting for me and explained me different details about the Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II. They explained me how they create the interior. The veneer and leather works are all handcrafted, as well the two small lines on the side of the car are painted by hand by only one person. A quality that you can see and feel. The previous car was nine years, but they couldn’t find much to enhance, as the car was already perfect. So only a few small amendments have been made to the already perfect car. One of the biggest changes is the new navigation system and the 8.8″ screen which shows the surround cameras. A chauffeured drive along the coast between Nice and Monaco showed me how nice the car is and relaxing. In comfortable leather seats with a fluffy carpet you enjoy the ride along the road. The Harman Kardon Sound System makes you finally feel like home or in a concert hall. After recife all this presentation of a 400.000 Euro super exclusive car I had time to explore the exclusive and elegant hotel Cap Estel. There are only 18 rooms and my suite was very nice and huge. Prices of the suite were around 2.000 Euro, so you can imagine how nice it was. Mike and Nicky The Costa del Sol doesn't close down for winter - it is full of (older) northern Europeans escaping the cold, and enjoying the cheap accommodation and food. It is often cheaper for them to move to the Costa del Sol for three months than stay home and heat their homes. The weather is not always great, but certainly is better than in northern Europe. It is actually quite a lively area in winter. Car rental is cheap in Spain as a rule, so you can decide to rent a car occasionally to get out and about a bit too. Costa del Sol: If you want it small and quiet, take a look at wonderful Maro (pop 800): http://www.absoluteaxarquia.com/areas/maro.html If you want city, I recommend genuine Málaga (pop 570 000). http://www.andalucia.com/cities/malaga/home.htm Nerja (pop. 22 000) would be something in between. Has retained much of its Andalucian small town charm, but has got all the amenities that also makes it popular with tourists.
