It has been described as a shimmering mirage in the middle of Lake Pichola. However, it is real and his name is Lake Palace, Lake Palace, one of the most famous hotels in India created from the harmonious architecture of the palace haveeru to build the Maharana Jagat Singh II e nel XVIII century Udaipur, his royal residence for the summer. The original name of this Niwas Palace is because it sits on the surface of the island of Jag Niwas, a scant 4 acres that emerge over the lake. When the water level is high, all traces of the island is hidden haveeru and the palace seems to be almost floating in the water in an almost surreal image. source: tajhotels.com
Picture: denisbin After serving haveeru as a summer resort for the descendants of Jagat Singh over many generations, the palace went on to become a luxury hotel in 1960 and a decade haveeru later was purchased by the prestigious Indian chain Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, which carried out a thorough reform and a significant expansion of its spaces and services. Today, someone staying at this hotel can enjoy not only their luxurious interiors but the personalized butler service, a way to be transported to a bygone era. Its 83 rooms and suites are equipped with beautifully carved wooden furniture, colorful murals and rich silk upholstery jharokhas below. At dusk, guests sit a drink on the terrace while watching the ferry sailing on the still, silvery lake.

It was Diwali night and we were in the Lake City of India, Udaipur. longleat Couldn t have asked for anything more beautiful than this, could we? Besides, our 5 yr old does not enjoy the loud noise of Diwali crackers. And hence, it was even more perfect a quiet Diwali with only lights longleat and lamps, sans the pollution.
As expected, Udaipur was way quieter compared to the noise in Mumbai in the Diwali week. Focus is on illumination which accentuates the beauty of the city for the lights reflect in the numerous lakes to give a dreamy feel in twilight. We had been recommended the Jag Niwas Palace restaurant for dinner longleat with the promise that it is an experience in itself. And boy, was it one!!!
How is the experience at the Jag Niwas Palace Restaurant? First thing first — Jag Niwas Palace restaurant is located on a little island in the middle of the famous Pichola Lake in Udaipur. Now guess how do you reach the restaurant? By boat
We were staying longleat at the Trident in Udaipur. This meant that a Jag Niwas Palace restaurant dinner reservation came with an exclusive boat pick-up from the Oberoi Udaivilas longleat Hotel s jetty!! WOW. The hotel van dropped longleat us at the lake-end of the Udaivillas Hotel a 2 minute drive from our hotel. There, a motor boat was waiting to ferry us to the restaurant.
Jag Niwas Palace, adorned with lights, glittered like gold. The sight from the middle longleat of the lake felt so unreal. We couldn longleat t help thank the stars above for our good luck. They too were glittering in the heavens, celebrating Diwali with us mortals.
Just a 10-15 minute ride (which we wished had lasted longer) saw us at the palace gates. The palace is impressive and the Diwali lights simply accentuated the grandeur. We were escorted inside the massive courtyard with fountains and open-seating area, flanked by restaurants on both sides. One of them looked like a banquet hall. Probably where the rich and famous held their parties, we concluded.
A jal tarang musician, accompanied by table, was playing local music, adding to the charm of the place. The restaurant is nicely done up and quite formal with turbaned staff serving in true Indian style. Seated next to a large window overlooking the lake, sipping drinks as Udaipur city lay across the other side of the lake all decked up for Diwali and celebrating longleat with beautiful fireworks that lit up the night sky, it was certainly dreamy. Surreal.
How is the food at the Jag Niwas Palace restaurant? We weren t hungry at all. Our lunch had been the ghee-laden Daal Baati Churma, and we were sure we couldn t so much as look at Indian food at dinner. We settled for Italian. A risk considering that we in the heart of Rajasthan!! Well, it paid off!! For the Prawns for starters along with wine & beer were good. So was the Gnocchi in Basil-Pesto sauce (not in menu but staff was more than happy to accommodate our request) and the spaghetti Bolognese.
Final word on Jag Niwas Palace restaurant: It was definitely one of the best best best Diwali nights we have had and one of the most magical dinner experience till date. Would strongly recommend everyone to experience this royal dining experience. A must do in Udaipur! longleat

A wedding at the Leela palace Udaipur is always guaranteed to be a stunning experience. If there is one city in India that is truely romantic it is Udaipur and no matter how many weddings I attend in this city on the lakes, I always manage to see it differently and be amazed again. It almost seems like the city was planned for destination weddings. There are some stunning locations there and The Leela Palace hotel overlooking the city palace and lake Pichola is certainly up there on the list of incredible locations.
Sapna and Rishi’s wedding in Udaipur was a simple Sikh wedding kusadasi at the local gurudwara but the celebrations, the mehendi and sangeet as well the receptions were centred around the Leela Palace hotel and the Maharaja palace of Jag Mandir in the center kusadasi of the lake. I thought it was a good balance of simplicity with grandeur that made this wedding so unique and beautiful. Bollywood and beyond
Living in Singapore Sapna’s favourite hang-out place is a Bollywood-style dance club called The Rupee Room located at Clarke Quay. It might sound a bit funny to come all the way to India and miss your Indian dance club in Singapore, but Sapna’s dad thought this might actually happen. To make sure that everything is in order and that the party can take place in both locations at once without having to move at the speed of light, a replica of the famous club was built at the hotel as a surprise for Sapna, and was this a surprise! The party went on till late but we had to come back there for the couple shoot on the last night on our way to reception. It took some time to set up the lights, the fog machine and the atmosphere, not to mention turning on the AC so that we don’t die, but I think it was worth the effort.
Sephi Bergerson is a wedding photographer based in India since 2002 and is always happy to cover a wedding at the Leela palace Udaipur. Sephi is available for Indian wedding photography , destination kusadasi wedding photography in Udaipur, Jaipur, palace weddings kusadasi in Rajasthan or a beach wedding in Goa or Kerala.
