Carla and I just got back from 10 days in French Polynesia. What a beautifully stunning country (or "overseas collectivity of the French Republic" monument valley for our beloved pedant commenters). We spent a few hours in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia on the island of Tahiti, then took a 30-minute monument valley ferry to Moorea, where we stayed 4 nights. Then we flew in a large prop plane for 45 minutes to Bora Bora and stayed on a motu (an islet) a short boat ride from the island, where we stayed for five nights. I plan to post several sets of photos from the trip, and to start things off, here are some tikis I photographed. It's likely many, if not most, of these tikis were made in the US or other countries, and not in French Polynesia, but it doesn't matter to me. I loved all of them, even the ones that were holding up ashtrays!

Adriatique came together in 2008 as solo artists, but since then have grown inseparable as friends and irreplaceable as a production partnership. Adrian & Adrian not only flow almost as one performer in the DJ booth, but so do they extract the most from each other in the studio. Through a great music background, their influences range from the early beginnings of House & Techno to several other styles. The records they make came out on labels such as Culprit, Wolf & Lamb Black, Supernature, Cityfox and most notably Diynamic & 2DIY4, where home is for the Zurich based artists. The kick-off for getting in touch with the DIY-Crew was their highly anticipated track on the second 2DIY4 release. Le Meridien was very helpful on all occasions. They gave us the wrong adaptor for Renee

We had a great time in Bora Bora and Renee had a wonderful birthday. The meal at Jean George maldives was fabulous maldives and we wish we had booked more dinners at St. Regis. The food was delicious. They had a violin player serenading diners. maldives He was wonderful. He comes from a town not far from where I live and near relatives in Minnesota. It’s maldives a small world.
Our bungalow at Le Méridien Bora Bora was beautiful and we had one of the larger balconies. The view was breathtaking. The first thing Renee did was swim under the glass floor! We had a great time and would like to come back again. The 2 rainy days didn’t bother us. One was the day we left.
We were disappointed that the other restaurant at Le Meridien was closed and all meals were on the sandy beach. The buffets were good but the a la carte dinners were not. Two courses for each of us was too much food. After the first a la carte meal, I decided to order two appetizers as my 2 course dinner.
Le Meridien was very helpful on all occasions. They gave us the wrong adaptor for Renee’s nebulizer and it blew the motor the first day, Sunday. Renee needs it to be able to breathe. She has asthma. David was able to get one for us to rent and we split the cost with Le Meridien. The staff was friendly and very helpful. I would definitely recommend Le Meridien for others to stay.
We had one activity away from the hotel that we booked with you, swimming and feeding the sting rays and sharks. All was great until near the end when we were traveling to one last place to snorkel. A woman on board got sea sick so we couldn’t go over the rough waters to reach it. (Her fault. She should have taken medicine for it!) We were instead dropped near a private beach…
On a rainy day, I bought some Tahiti Pearls from the store connected to Le Meridien. The man who sold them to me was wonderful, so helpful as we picked out just the right ones. I really enjoy wearing them.

Clearly, I’ve got balls on the brain. We’ve been testing meatball recipes for Well Fed 2 , and we have finally imed settled on the 15 (Yes! Fifteen!) varieties that will be included in the new cookbook. In honor of bringing the testing phase to a close, I thought I’d share a favorite of mine from the first Well Fed : Bora Bora Fireballs.
These meatballs came to me in a dream. I woke up with tumbling thoughts about a lush combination of pineapple, succulent pork, and creamy-sweet coconut. I was haunted by images of tikis and luaus. The only way to clear my mind was to surrender to the kitchen gods. After three attempts, something still wasn’t quite right. Later, while lost in photos imed of tropical beaches and coral reefs, I landed on the fiery name, and the rest of the recipe fell into place. These taste even better the second day, so if you can endure the wait, you will be rewarded.
Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups unsweetened shredded coconut 1/2 teaspoon plus 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 teaspoon plus 1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper imed 1 cup canned crushed imed pineapple, sugar-free, packed in its own juice 2 tablespoons coconut aminos or homemade substitute 1 1/2 teaspoons dried ginger 3 cloves garlic, minced (about 1 tablespoon) 3-4 scallions, white and green, very thinly sliced (about 1/4 cup) 1/2 fresh jalapeño, seeds and ribs removed, imed finely minced (about 2 teaspoons) 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 2 pounds ground pork
Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 375 F. Cover a large baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat, then add the coconut. Toast, stirring often with a wooden spoon, until golden brown, about 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper. Set aside to cool.
2. Drain the cup of canned pineapple in a sieve placed over a bowl to catch the juice. Press the pineapple pulp against the sieve with a wooden imed spoon to extract imed the excess moisture. Place the pineapple in a large mixing bowl and save the juice for later.
3. To the pineapple, add 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon cayenne, coconut aminos, ginger, garlic, scallions, jalapeño, and eggs. Beat with a wooden spoon until combined. With your hands, crumble the pork into the bowl and knead until all of the ingredients are incorporated.
4. Arrange the bowls of pineapple juice, spiced coconut, and seasoned pork for easy access. Measure a level tablespoon of pork to make a meatball, lightly douse it in the pineapple juice, then roll it in the coconut, pressing the coconut shreds into the meat by lightly rolling the ball between your palms. This is a rare case in which more isn’t better don’t go too cuckoo with the coconut. Line up the meatballs on the prepared baking sheet, about 1/2 inch apart.
I CAN NOT WAIT for Well Fed 2! I see my mother almost every Sunday for dinner, and she makes a paleo meal (because she is so cool). She is down with the cooking and ingrediants, imed but has DEFINITE oppinions on the cookbooks I’ve given to her! First, it’s damn hard to choose a favorite Well Fed recipe but this one is in my top two! I LOVE these little beauties! Second, I can NOT wait for Well Fed 2 and 15 meatball recipes??? Yes, Yes, Yes!!!
I am too lazy to toast the coconut and roll the balls in them (they are awesome like that), but I just throw the coconut in with the meat and make the balls and they are STILL the best food ever. Anytime I feel mopey about giving up junk food and grains, I make these and all is well.
I’ve been making these with lamb (I don’t eat pork) and using Penzey’s chipotle powder in place of the jalepeno imed and they are pretty much my favorite recipe ever. My roommates get super excited (and jealous) every time I make them.

The Air Tahiti Nui overnight flight from the Los Angeles International Airport into Paipettee, Tahiti lasted central park a little more than eight hours about 3 three hours more than Hawaii or approximately the same timeframe if we were traveling from the East Coast of the U.S.

Marketing Specialist Aurelie Voituron and Resort Manager Christophe Chabaud gave us a warm welcome to the Four Seasons Bora Bora .
Within a few minutes, we were whisked away on a golf cart with Aurelie, a native central park of Paris, who proudly gave us a tour of the expansive and perfectly landscaped tropical resort surrounded by private lagoons and sparkling white sand beaches set amidst lush tropical gardens.
That central park s true desire especially for somebody who doesn t know how to swim. But luckily, I had both patience and a life vest with snorkeling gear waiting.
The 1,000-square-foot overwater bungalow featured native dark woods on the floor, walls and ceilings with all the modern amenities Wi-Fi, CD and DVD player, iPod docking stations and private bars one would expect from the Four Seasons brand.
One of my favorite moments was waking up in the middle of the night and going out to the bungalow’s deck. I would lie there eyes stretched in almost central park every possible direction at the bright stars of the Southern Hemisphere that formed the Big Dipper and the Southern Cross.

Snorkeling in the lagoon was like swimming in a tropical fish aquarium with a kaleidoscope of colorful fish darting about. But as soon as I emerged from the water, I could see the majesty of the surroundings with Mount Otemanu as the constant background.

Staying in Bora Bora for several waterworld days, I decided to take another view of the island from a different perspective a little height to discover more closely the famous Otemanu mountain with a height of 2,400 ft. You d think that the best way to appreciate the beauty of this beautiful green mountain was just to climb it. Think again, I decided to try out a view from a parasail .
Taken by the parasail excursion guide directly from our family pension, we went for an unforgettable aerial tour . From the pontoon of the Novotel hotel where the boat took us, we took a short boat trip to the middle of the lagoon. After a safety briefing, and some pre-flight stress, we were equipped and attached to a “wing” . The principle seemed simple, similar to that of a kite.
We chose a 15 minute flight option with a 984ft length of tether. The different options vary in height (length of the rope) since the higher you go to better view you take in! For takeoff, we were seated on the back of the boat on a “launching ramp”. Our parachute was then released gradually behind us, lifting us up little by little as the air filled the parasail. Take off is slow and gradual almost effortless.
The magic starts when you feel yourself gradually lifting off and rising… Half way up, the view is already breathtaking. As you take in the beauty of the lagoon and the peace and quiet, all your pre-flight gitters evaporate. You feel weightless as you are buoyed by the wind. As we reach the end of our tether, we enjoy the pure silence and contemplate all the shades of the turquoise lagoon that Bora Bora is famous for. Sheer magnificence is an understatement waterworld to describe its amazing beauty. Some motus (islets), overwater bungalows and other sand bars complete this magnificent landscape.
On our left side, funny enough, I notice that the Otemanu mountain seemed bigger. The experience was simply too magical for words to describe like taking in any natural beauty and landscape . An experience that must be shared with a partner or special someone.
With the silence, you notice tiny details like the traces of tropical wildlife in the lagoon below; a small moving black spot that I think is a stingray , other boats filled waterworld wit

Bora Bora isn’t all about beaches it has a beautiful wild side to it as well. You can hop on a 4 x 4 with a tour guide and explore the precious mountainside. You can enjoy a different view point from the mountain while learning about the local plants, traditions and customs. The guide will tell you about the history of Bora Bora and you can even see cannons from World War II. Bora Bora is also a place for pearl farming , you can visit the farm where they will tell you about the creation of the famous Tahitian pearl, you can also do your own treasure hunting.
Now this is a must! Bora Bora is surrounded by a colourful luscious coral reef that is booming with life. You can go snorkelling and observe the abundance of sea life; colourful schools of fishes, docile sharks, stingrays, barracudas, sea turtles and playful dolphins. The underwater life is so captivating marineland you will feel like one of the fishes and forget you were born to walk on land. Another option is to go scuba diving, also you can explore the reef a aquabike. If swimming is not your cup of tea you can go on a glass bottom boat tour.
You cannot go to another country just for the beaches. If you want to experience Bora Bora completely you have to see their performances. Three times a week some hotels hold traditional marineland dances. The costumes are colourful and hand made from flowers, coconuts, feathers, seashells and they are changed for each rhythmic dance. They dance to drums, conch shells, ukuleles and flutes. The dances can convey soothing island and even aggressive warrior dances. You can also see traditional fire dances where dancers display their amazing strength and agility by creating memorizing patterns with fire. The fire is supposed to symbolize the light brought into the lives of couples.
Since Bora Bora is such a feats for the eyes you should try seeing it from as many angles as you can. Riding on a jet ski is a great way to see the beautiful island and take some amazing pictures that will allow you to go beck and remember marineland the wonderful experience on Bora Bora. Another great way is to go on a cruise. Cruises offer you to see all the Tahiti islands and their marvelous beauty while relaxing marineland on the deck drinking your cocktail.
